A City of Sadness

1989 Mandarin MovieDrama History
POWERED BYJustWatch

The story of a family embroiled in the "White Terror" that was wrought on the Taiwanese people by the Kuomintang government after their arrival from mainland China in the late 1940s.

MAN OF CINEMA
"In life, far from the motherland.
In death, returning to the motherland. Both life and death are governed by destiny." Director with this gripping tale clearly wanted to show his frustration and resentment at being abused and killed by an authoritarian government. The film relies on sophisticated storytelling techniques, from striking imagery that subtly conveys a sense of being constrained by various frameworks and rules. It shows how the political environment so sharply reflects the changes happening to a small family over the years under the white terror. I really loved the small metaphor in the film. Where the main protagonist plays a deaf and dumb character , it symbolises people being silenced and oppressed.
