MAN OF CINEMA
Growing up everyone told you the sky is blue, but when it isn't anymore then
how will you react?
Amrum is a complex and dark tale of coming of age, where the young boy nanning's life is turned upside down when germany finally lost the WW2 and hitler is dead. All these years he has only listened to, how great their motherland is, Hitler is their saviour, hidden from atrocities and blinded propaganda.
But what happens at the end of fascism?, what happens when that world crumbles around you and what you believed is no longer a truth but an ugly lie.
As nanning ran errands to gather ingredients to make a break and butter for his ill mother, in this quest his eyes really started to open about the failings of his family, country and Nazi propaganda. Here the kid desperately tries to please his parents, even when the parents are the ones making all the mistakes. This nature is embedded in nationalist mentality where you go to an extreme extent to please someone no matter what the consequences are. But here his quest was driven by naive innocence and immense love for his mother who he wanted to see happy.
This film so realistically shows the ill fate and burden german civilians had to carry even during the war and after the fall of Hitler's regime. In both situations most were deprived of basic food and rights, manipulated and suppressed by fear. It shows what a blind loyalty to an authoritarian regime can cause.
This film has some of most stunning natural cinematography you will see in the films. Its a place where people should thrive and live with prosperity instead the town was plagued by war and famine.
The film ends on an optimistic note, reminding us that even after the greatest defeat, even when shame and sorrow overwhelm us, it's possible to start life anew.
