"A Different Kind of Gangster Movie"
Bathatha begins like a serious gangster
drama, introducing us to a dreaded don and showing the darker side of his criminal nature. But just when you expect the story to continue in that direction, the film takes a sudden turn and transforms into something completely different. The shift from a dark gangster story to a surprisingly dark comedy and feel-good experience is what makes Bathatha interesting. It makes you wonder how the film managed to go from such a serious beginning to where it eventually ends up.
The narration begins by focusing on Vijay Sethupathi’s titular character, Bathatha, while also introducing us to the life of a schoolboy. Bathatha is a feared figure in society, someone whose very presence creates terror among the people around him. The story follows these two characters separately before gradually bringing their lives together. The way the film reaches this point is brilliantly handled, as the narrative slowly shifts into a dark comedy without feeling forced. This unexpected transition becomes one of the most interesting aspects of the film.
The world created around this gangster character is deeply written, covering everything from his rivalries and family to his childhood and past. The writing leaves very little unexplored, which helps the film smoothly shift into a completely different style of narration in the second half, eventually bringing in a feel-good element. Because the characters and their backgrounds are properly established, we never feel that the situations involving Vijay Sethupathi’s character and the boy are being brought in unnecessarily. Everything feels connected to the story and contributes to the emotional journey of the film.
Overall, Bathatha is best enjoyed as a different kind of gangster movie that mixes crime with feel-good elements.
