A brilliant film about patronizing and patriarchal contemporary society where even a strong, confident and independent woman gets tossed like an emotional ball for their own greed. Inspired by the life of Marathi stage and screen actress Hansa Wadkar, Bhumika explores a woman’s solitude, her search for identity, affection and love in a society where nobody really cares about her choices and happiness and always tries to cage her and abuse her, and whenever she tried to escape from those realities she had to pay price for her own freedom and choices. Shyam Benegal with his grounded yet brazen approach presents Usha’s journey as both tragic and fascinating. It shows how patriarchy is deeply rooted inside us. And yet till this time we are not able to remove those issues from its roots. This film still feels so painfully relevant and important.
