The Cine Column
Blast strikes a distinctive tone, oscillating between homegrown martial‑arts
fun and a crowded, occasionally tedious crime procedural. While it delivers bursts of genuinely explosive theatrical energy, its bloated runtime and overcrowded narrative structure prevent it from reaching true greatness. Preity Mukhundhan is the undeniable heartbeat of the film. Rather than slipping into a gender‑swapped action‑hero mold, she brings Nila to life with emotional depth, remarkable physical agility, and commanding screen presence. Watching her dismantle the normalized sexism of underestimating goons is immensely satisfying. Arjun, meanwhile, lends his trademark swagger and aging dignity to Rajaraman. Crucially, the writing allows him to step back gracefully, giving Preity and Abhirami space to lead the physical heavy lifting while he anchors the film with emotional weight and martial gravitas. Director Subash demonstrates a flair for staging mass‑appeal comedy and action sequences. The choreography employs precise speed‑ramping and inventive setups, while Arun Radhakrishnan’s slick, vibrant camerawork elevates the martial‑arts blocks. Ravi Basrur’s score marks an interesting departure from his usual industrial tone, shifting into colorful, high‑tempo beats that complement the energy. Where Blast falters is in its over‑indulgent screenplay, riddled with loopholes. The final act stumbles with a jarring tonal shift into overt sentimentality, disrupting the light, high‑energy momentum built earlier. The pacing flaws and narrative clutter dilute what could have been a lean, genre‑defining thriller. Even so, Blast remains a highly entertaining, if occasionally patchy, theatrical ride. By subverting traditional mass‑cinema conventions—giving its central women genuine agency and fighting power while men support from the sidelines—it offers something refreshing. With a tighter, more disciplined script, it might have been a better version. As it stands, it is still a thoroughly fun time at the movies.

I didn’t grow up cheering for Thala or Thalapathy — I grew up watching
Ulaganayagan and the OG Thalapathy. That’s why Action King Arjun holds a special place in my mind. Arjun

“A Fun Ride Despite The Predictable Story” This movie is best enjoyed without
watching the trailer or knowing much about the story. Going in blind makes the experience more
