that single choice undermines what could have been a genuinely progressive film. the movie deserves credit for bringing trans representation to mainstream bollywood, i guess. and there are moments where it handles the subject matter with genuine care. but the ending? a cop-out that prioritizes a feel-good romantic resolution over something more meaningful and honest. the film seems to think that manu's character growth is complete once he "accepts" maanvi, and that acceptance should be rewarded with getting the girl. to be fair, the film does tackle some important conversations about trans identity in a culture where those conversations are desperately needed, and there are moments of genuine vulnerability and education embedded in the narrative. the supporting cast provides some authentic explorations of prejudice and acceptance in indian society. but the movie... is ultimately more interested in manu's journey than maanvi's humanity, i suppose. she becomes a vehicle for his growth rather than a fully realized character with her own art that doesn't revolve around whether she ends up with the guy who initially rejected her because he's transphobic. this isn't the progression people think it is. it's a repackage of traditional bollywood romance with a 'woke' veneer. glad this film exists and started conversations but i'm incredibly frustrated by its lack of courage to follow through on what could have been a truly revolutionary narrative choice.
