MAN OF CINEMA
Being Queer is better than being an ignorant, selfish , egoistic and toxic man.
Because at least Queer people have accepted themselves fully, but most men are scared of their own self, every man has a feminine side in them in some form, but they are so ashamed of themselves and from the society that they suppress those emotional feelings and take that frustration on women by abusing them.
Dorothy is the kind of movie indian cinema needed in between all the violent, toxic, hyper active crap films we are getting. Dorothy is such a powerful yet beautiful movie in so many ways.
It makes us question where our ideas of masculinity and femininity actually come from. How we discriminate against humans based genders which itself is a social construct, created to segregate, burdened with expectations and exploited for selfish needs. The film shows the mirror to people who have made the world so hard and cruel to live in for a woman and queer person with little dignity, identity , respect and love. These things should not be asked for, it's the right of every human being. The film shows how we strip all those things from a woman and make them worse than a slave.
The movie exposes stereotypes and discrimination brilliantly, but one thing that this movie shows perfectly was conditioning. From childhood we condition the kid by telling him not to cry, or show feelings or act tough all the time. All this makes them suppress their own feelings. We see that Karthi’s primary exposure to understand women was through movies and women around him like his mom. The movies we see growing up were often deeply misogynistic, suppressed women identities, and her mom who always does household chores, and serving for others.
So men start to believe from childhood that women are supposed to behave and live in a certain way and Men are supposed to be certain way. If either of them tries to act on their desires, the society interferes and labels them with names, insults and calls it taboo and outcast them. This story shows how the conditioning and growth affects how we see people and from what lens.
I have seen a handful of people who didn't like the ending, but i completely disagree. Karthi is a man who was made into the man he is because of Subbu. And men raised by women in a man eat man world, are compassionate, empathetic and considerate enough to shed the veil of "Male Ego" which was forcefully and conditionally laid on top of them with outside factors. When Karthi last sees Subbu, he doesn't see Subbu as a male/female. He sees Subbu as a part of his life so far. He'd rather stay with her and protect her than let her roam the streets like a beggar without a family.
That's a Man.
And I dont see Karthi and Subbu differently, they are one, Karthi is part of man and Subbu is part of woman, together they become Dorothy, a perfect representation of human who have accepted themselves truly and has risen above from all the violence, hate and toxicity in the world.
