MAN OF CINEMA
An unconventional biopic for an unconventional writer.
The film looks at Kafka’s mundane, bourgeois life, and the not-so-mundane and mean world around him. The film doesn't waste time exploring his childhood much, it's more interesting in showcasing his dilemmas and actions in his adult life.
It unveil paternal melancholy that impacted his work and psyche. On the other hand, it still frames him as an unknown & mysterious person. If you are anticipating linear bullet points about Kafka’s life, with a few Easter eggs about how his most famous stories came to be then this film is not for you. It's much more complex and a riddle to break down. Through space, time and his complex mind Franz intervenes into his psyche in order to visualise them.
The film also points out the vulturous ways Kafka’s work and life have been canonized as commercial/tourist scam almost a century following his death. I really liked this, how capitalism thriving on a misunderstood genius who hated these materialistic things.
