Isaac Zachariah
The story was carried almost entirely by Denzel Washington’s performance.
His portrayal of Creasy, a broken man who finds purpose in protecting Pita, was both intense and deeply moving. The bond between him and Dakota Fanning brings heart to a film otherwise soaked in violence. But three things pulled me out: (1) the villain’s wife’s card showing up with a random middleman - lazy, illogical plotting; (2) the twist with Pita’s father - contrived and unearned; and (3) the finale - if the deal was ‘life for life’, why doesn’t Creasy just walk her back to the car? It plays like the script wanted a martyr more than an ending that made sense. Quibbles aside, the movie holds fairly okay, but mostly on Denzel’s back.
