Jananayagan truly feels like the end of an era.
It marks the farewell of one of the greatest superstars of Tamil cinema—a man who never failed to entertain with his screen presence, dance, heroism, charm, enthusiasm, and unmatched aura. The title Jananayagan now feels more like Vijay’s official designation than just the name of a film, especially with his transition into politics.
This is undoubtedly an aura-farming film, but the reason it works is simple: it’s Vijay. I’ve watched countless star vehicles over the years, and this one clearly serves as an entry point into his political journey. The film’s ideology is woven into the narrative, making its intentions very clear.
H. Vinoth still manages to let flashes of his writing brilliance shine through, even though the overall film settles into being a commercial potboiler. It’s not his strongest work, but there are moments where you can still see the filmmaker behind Sathuranga Vettai and Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru. I felt a lot of research oriented episodes would be great if he would have treated as episodes!! Heavy and comprehensive ideas were stomped in.
Mamitha gets surprisingly good screen time and delivers well. Anirudh’s music does its job effectively. While the background score isn’t on the level of Leo, it still elevates several moments. Sathyan Sooryan’s cinematography is impressive, and the transition edits deserve a special mention—they’re stylish and seamlessly executed.
I haven’t watched Bhagavanth Kesari, so I can’t compare the two, but as Vijay’s farewell film, I expected something far more memorable. Instead, Jananayagan ends up being a decent commercial entertainer rather than the grand cinematic send-off many fans dreamed of.
That said, this film is incredibly close to my heart. It isn’t a movie I’ll judge purely on filmmaking, screenplay, or technical aspects. For me, this is a celebration of one man. There will never be another farewell like this for any actor. This is a film that fans will remember more for Vijay than for anything else.
Finally, a word to H. Vinoth.
I’ve always admired your writing. Your first two films remain among the finest Tamil films in terms of screenplay and storytelling. Please return to that zone. You have brilliant ideas and strong ideological foundations as a writer. We want to see that fearless, thought-provoking filmmaker again. The spark is still there—I could see glimpses of it even here. I genuinely hope your next films fully embrace that brilliance because Tamil cinema needs that version of H. Vinoth.
