First of all this movie is a revelation for me.
The narrative style, camera angles, the level of character study with its indulgence, the language used in conversation between the characters, the choices of all those coming together brings something so naturally new for me. The opening sequence can be indulging for both mother & daughter. It gives the feeling that both of them aren't fully in trust/support of each other with neither of them knowing if that time together is even good enough for them or not. There is a possibility of disrupting each other's world when they're together. But still somehow in instances later they're able to bring in some sort of reflection of what is happening with them/their life and take some decision in that moment. We can see through Lacy's eyes the chapter wise unfolding of relationship & its dynamics with her mother being with someone she wants to share her life with. We can see how Lacy says that she is done with book one which is the same time when Janet lets go off with Wayne. Lacy is kind of keeping all those records in her mind while observing the different types of aspects that life has to offer for any adult and the emotions they undergo in those moments. Lacy loves her mother Janet and she misses her when she ain't around. She asks her mother if she can have a piece of her in return she gets a strand of her hair maybe that was the only possible way of letting her know of her instability in her life and how much lonely she feels every day but still she can't stop trying after getting an idea from observing herself which makes her question any decision that she takes. One may feel at the start that this is Lacy who is living in her world, meeting people & making memories. As the camera is mostly on her noticing & observing things around, also the camera matches her pace & joy when she finds a friend. The first 15 minutes become a moment for Lacy as she thinks of finding a friend like Sequoia but things soon start to change as Janet & her complexities with her relationship takes over this world. Sometimes it feels like this is more of a bitter sweet relationship between a mother & her daughter and there is always a cold war between them but they're so out of place right now from what they're facing every day that they need to face the situation first and so the minimum they can do is acknowledging each other's presence once in a while and they live off those moments for most of the time. The ending did what could have made both their heartache feel a little less and made the realisation that to become someone you have to find some form of solace within yourself and try to show up & just stare or perform whenever you feel like even though the puppet show going on doesn't look promising enough. And you, my parents, am I not right? You who loved me for that small beginning of my love for you, from which I always shyly turned away, because the distance in your features grew, changed, even while I loved it, into cosmic space where you no longer were. And when I feel inclined to wait before the puppet stage, no, rather to stare at it so intensely that in the end, to counter balance my searching gaze, an angel has to come as an actor and begin manipulating the lifeless bodies of the puppets to perform. Angel and puppet! Now at last there is a play. Then what we separate can come together by our very presence. And only then the entire cycle of our own life seasons is revealed and set in motion. The above lines are filled with metaphors that feels very whimsical, life like believable, hoplessness, existential crisis, identity crisis, loneliness, alienation and also the fight between the artificial & the true self
