i this this movie being brutally misunderstood upon its release is one of the greatest cinematic injustices of the 2000s. marketed to teenage boys as a mindless, sexy slasher... oh they fumbled this one so badly. this is a razor-sharp, dark feminist (ooh, there's the scary word! beware) comedy that was easily wayyy ahead of its time. absolutely sabotaged by its own marketing. sold as a shallow vehicle for the male gaze, audiences completely missed that the film was actually looking right back at them, armed with teeth. literally. demonic possession as a metaphor for the trauma of coming of age? sign me the hell up. 'low shoulder' sacrificing a virgin for a record deal... they are the ultimate, faux-sensitive "nice guys" who are actually entirely soulless, willing to literally consume a young woman just to get a taste of fame. very clearly aimed at male entitlement and the entertainment industry. jennifer uses the exact things society demands of young women—beauty, approachability, and sex appeal—as a literal trap. the boys in the film die because they are so blinded by the prospect of getting with the hot cheerleader that they walk right into their own slaughter lol. needless to say, i am a big fan. easily became one of my favorites.
