A tender, sensual and meditative exploration of adolescence, coming of age,
sexual awakening , beliefs and value system of 16 year old lucia when she travels to church with her choir group.
Through the cinematic means it explores the complex themes surrounding religion and sexuality which leads to personal conflict and reflection.
I love the scenes where lucia momentarily loses herself in the world which is aloof to us with her rapturous, melancholic gaze. It is by no means limited to her eyes or mind but seems to emanate from her entire body, speaking of a deep longing for something which she is not able to understand yet.
The film is also very biblical in nature, almost presenting lucia as virgin mary, lucia seeing one of the workers as a form of jesus, sexual symbolism through religious images. Sacrificing her body to christ by suppressing her desires or to act on it.
All the surreal images like the image of navel changing to flower with bee, and many more
projects a sensitivity to the experiential spaces of female adolescence.
