"A stage play dressed up as a Film”
This film, directed by Rahi Anil Barve,
who earlier made Tumbbad, is set in a dystopian version of Mumbai. Most of the story takes place inside an old, creepy movie theatre, which gives the film a dark and unusual setting. The story is told through four main characters, and the narrative focuses deeply on their thoughts, emotions, and psychological struggles.
The main issue with the film lies in its premise and storytelling style. While the plot itself is not boring, it does not feel cinematic enough for the big screen. The setting and dialogue-heavy scenes make it feel more like a stage play than a film. Because of this, the movie never fully delivers the larger visual or emotional impact.
Technically, the film is impressive. The production design, dark visuals, and strong performances create a haunting mood. Despite its strengths, the film feels better suited as a stage drama, relying more on dialogue and internal conflict than cinematic storytelling.
Overall, the film turns out to be a disappointing experience, even though I didn’t expect it to be like Tumbbad. It is not a bad film technically, but it does not fully justify itself as a cinematic experience.

For all its allusions to grand ideas, #Mayasabha is a resounding dud.
It mistakes ideas for drama and subtext for soul; it reeks of dinner-table intellectualism. FULL REVIEW HERE

Hands down to Javed Jaffrey for such a powerful performance. He completely owns the screen and brings a quiet intensity
