Mollywood Times

2026 Malayalam MovieDrama Comedy
POWERED BYJustWatch

A young aspiring filmmaker dreams of becoming Malayalam cinema's greatest horror director, determined to "save" the industry despite his father's warnings about the limitations of their film world.

“The Ugly Side of Chasing Cinema” Movies about cinema usually follow a
familiar journey of struggles and success. However, Mollywood Times avoids that formula and stays true to Abhinav Sundar Nayak's unique storytelling style, presenting the world and its people through a different perspective. The film follows Naslen's character and his obsession with cinema from a young age. Instead of telling a typical success story, it uses dark humor to explore the hidden politics, manipulations, and darker side of the film industry. Another interesting aspect is that the protagonist is surrounded by fake, selfish, and opportunistic people. Rather than focusing on the struggles of filmmaking, the screenplay spends more time exploring the toxic people and negative situations around his journey. Much of the story is told through the hero's internal voice-overs, where he expresses his frustrations, hopes, judgments, and grudges toward the people around him. The childhood portions are recreated beautifully, with excellent production design that brings back memories of the VCR cassette and CD shop era. The 2D animation sequences used to portray characters' thoughts and imagination were also fun to watch. Naslen delivers one of his best performances, while the supporting cast also gets enough screen space and strong character moments. My main issue is the repetitive second half, where certain ideas are revisited multiple times. This makes the 2-hour-46-minute runtime feel longer than necessary. Overall, Mollywood Times works as a hate letter to cinema wrapped in Abhinav Sundar Nayak's unique storytelling style. Cinephiles will likely enjoy it, especially because of its nostalgic references to movie culture.

the most honest, brutal, beautiful coming of age film I had ever seen.
It almost felt like a tight slap for those who wander in fantasies and not accepting the reality! Loved it

Abhinav Sundar Nayak is one of the most honest directors in recent times.

filmmaking and dark humour which landed well with me. Great direction, cinematography, engaging

A love letter to Malayalam cinema.
Another bold attempt from Abinav Sundar Nayak's usual style. A film that gives freshness with its script and making right from the beginning of
