MAN OF CINEMA
"They can lock us up, but they can't lock up our minds."
When women direct women, that shit hits real hard, both emotionally and psychologically. Directed by Deniz Gamze Mustang provides a woman's gaze into their adolescent life, puberty, internal struggles, freedom, women rights, oppression, social taboos like anything you have ever seen. All that with such intimate, tender treatment to the narrative.
It's such a powerful and poignant portrayal of five young women fighting against oppressive traditions, yearning for freedom and self-expression. Captures the experiences of growing up under restrictive societal norms, deprived sexually and treated as cattle.
Every frame and aesthetic of the film feels intentional, with cinematography that highlights both the beauty and the suffocation of their world. And shows the devastating consequences of denying young women their autonomy.
Movies also show that What breaks you makes you strong, The resilience and rebel nature of these girls is such an important message to stand up against the patriarchy. It's a movie that makes you fear for the worst and also leaves you with hope at the end.
It's a story that needs to be told in every generation.
