POWERED BYJustWatch

A husband and wife, it was the time of child marriage when girl child was refused education and pushed into marriage, he chose to educate his wife and were a social reformer they went to campaign for increased rights for underprivileged.

MAN OF CINEMA
From Reformers to Revolutionaries, the story of duo Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and
Savitribai Phule is portrayed with honesty and integrity in this film. The film majorly focuses on their social work regarding eradication of untouchability, fighting the caste system, educating women and helping the oppressed section of society. I don't know how much content is censored by the CBFC, they have ordered heavy cuts which resulted in a delay of film release. But still despite the cuts, the movie has a very powerful and resilient tone against the untouchability and age old meaningless traditions of caste and religion. I love the authenticity in this film. We see people speaking marathi, english often unlike some films where everyone just speaks hindi. The dialogues and writing is really good which is what gives the taste of that era, mood and emotions. The biggest strength of this film is the performances of Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha. Both compliment each other very well as a couple and also a power against the injustice. Pratik especially, as he ages in the film his performance becomes more nuanced and very affecting, i was loving him in every frame. Patralekha was also brilliant, i loved her dialogue delivery, she had that pause and softness in her but strong facial expressions and body language, which needed for this character. Overall Phule is an honest biopic you will see in recent years without any exaggeration and creative liberty. in fact it could have been even better if there was no censorship. It's not an art house film, but it's good to see honest biopic in bollywood especially the kinds of movies that are being made in the industry. I also feel the movie would have been more effective if it was made in marathi, which was the language of all characters and story. Also there are some dramatic scenes in the movie, but mostly the film stays grounded, true to facts and honest portrayals.
