strength, respect, power,and another gender carries vulnerability, expectations, weak and taboo. If you guessed which gender is which, then it shows what exactly is wrong with this patriarchal society. This film is a tale of ambition for peaceful life in chaotic times, ruined by the great cruelty of patriarchy who are too insecure, a movie at the end which aches your heart and leaves you with little words. The story takes place in Germany after the Thirty Years' War in the seventeenth century, where a mysterious person disguised as a soldier arrives in a remote village and claims to be the legitimate heir to an abandoned estate, seeking to obtain life and stability, and that person does everything possible to achieve harmony, community, trust and integration into society, just to be betrayed by their own people who thrived under her. I really loved how the film looks and feels from the very beginning, very bergmanesque. from the very first shots, the countryside is still burning, rotting lands, dead hopeless faces. But when roses returns from war and claims inheritance of a land and starts her new life, it feels like the start of a new prosperous era, only to be struck by venom of greed, patriarchy. Then the film transforms Rose's existence into a constant negotiation between the body, her value and contribution, and the norms that govern both. Sandra Huller absolutely killed it, What a performance! A broken face, pierced by a bullet and then stitched back together, whose asymmetry bears the mark of pain from the very beginning of the film, and that trauma and weight she carries till the end. This film proves again that gender is just a social construct built to dictate roles, oppress and abuse.
