MAN OF CINEMA
Very unusual, unique and refreshing Wes Anderson film before he discovered
aesthetic settings, fantasy world, and play style narratives in his later films. I don't know somehow i felt this movie is so much better than most of his films. Also this movie is a semi-biography of Wes himself. And you can easily feel that in the movie. It's a quirky coming of age story of a very redeemable character called Max Fischer, a teenager who attends Rushmore Academy, where he falls in love with elementary school teacher Rosemary Cross, while also befriending Herman Blume, a depressed millionaire who also falls in love with her. In the case of Max's character, Wes talks about failure, about how academia wants him to be or do something, while he is a great world builder, breaking stereotypes and pre conceived notions and boundaries. As for Herman, it seems that this is the role that Sofia Coppola hired him for Lost in Translation, playing a depressed man, estranged from his children and about to separate from his wife. What I like about these is that they are very Anderson characters, while Rosemary is the most real character, having to deal with these two crazy people. Max is, literally, a character from this Wes Anderson world. Somewhat brilliant and insecure, who doesn't know how to relate to the rest of the world and who lives in his own world. A complete nut case, who can break or make the world. I really liked how it blended quirky comedy with a more emotional, coming-of-age story. It never felt like it was dragged or dull. It was Very witty, stylish, well written and packed with brilliant performances from everyone. Loved the chemistry between Murray and Schwartzman, the bromance, the rivalry, they both are very similar but yet very different. You know Jason Schwartzman came to his audition wearing a prep-school blazer which sported a Rushmore patch he had made himself. That the kind of involvement and dedication you need from an actor, when you see max you see only him, the actor who is playing doesn't even slightly matter. Jason totally embodied that character in him and went nuts. Wes used musical montages with pop songs from the 60s, something he was very good at, but he lost it in his following films, i dont know why but its a shame. I really enjoyed the music in thsi film. I wish Wes makes more movies like these now, because his current style seems repetitive and overwhelming sometimes.
