MAN OF CINEMA
There is no better surrealist anti-war satire which shows the borders are
imaginary lines we draw, a border doesn't change how greatly familiar and relatable both people across the border are, but only separated by hatred for the greed and ego of people in power.
The story is about two soldiers stationed at a fictional desert border separated by a single thin line of fence. One person standing guard on each side, these two soldiers sworn to protect their respective homelands and preserve the fragile peace between nations.
But they share the same shelter and live together, share the ration and struggles that come with harsh remote places. But as time passes, the madness rises, the psychological burdens and pushes them to the edge making them lose their identity, values and makes them forget which side they belong to and what they are fighting for.
The film brilliantly employs split-screen techniques to distinguish, disorienting, even dizzying effects as the film tilts further and further into the merging of madness.
This film is so reminiscent of the state of my country right now with border disputes with Pakistan, we were literally one, and now hungry for each other's blood. Only the hatred, fear and imaginary borders separate us.
