MAN OF CINEMA
"the flow of the river never ceases, and the water never stays the same.
on the surface of pools, bubbles burst, then reform. never lingering. they're like people in this world and their dwellings." When you are enslaved to past memories, people and things, it's hard to move on in life and feel happy. You will keep visiting the same old places, keep searching for lost things, hoping to find that one thing which connects to a person which will make you happy. But it hardly happens. This film oozes that meditative feeling of sitting on shore and waiting and hoping for the person who will come back one day. It's sad, but very intimate, gentle and emotional. It's cool as a summer breeze and as sweet as it is melancholic. This film is too natural, playing on sudden magical moments of our life and sudden destiny, and how both can be intertwined. The plot is presented in an easy-to-understand way in the first half, and the many hints that are later resolved are nothing special, which is why it's so heartbreaking. The direct depiction of the bitter present and the tense conversations are emotionally stirring, but I think it's all very well done and skillfully crafted to show the protagonist's circumstances and beliefs. The visuals and sounds depict that huge gaping hole in Sono's heart which cannot be filled with anything, and it cannot be repaired. We understand time as moving linearly from the past to the future. The past will eventually pass, and the future will come after it...but when you are in grief present or future really doesn't matter, time moves completely differently, and often you are stuck in the past reliving those sweet memories, but in real time you will be in such agonising pain. This movie beautifully captures that. Its unique portrait of grief and loss, and what it really means to be Super happy forever. Its not a sad film at all, its a lovely film which instills our beliefs in fates and chances.
