MAN OF CINEMA
Based on a true story about a group who rob a museum in broad daylight, but
soon they discover that preserving artwork is more difficult than stealing it.
The Mastermind is a very interesting character driven film, about a man who’s trying to provide for his family and Josh O’Conner plays the lovable idiot very well.
The middle portion of the film drags a bit but the unexpected ending really makes it worth it. It's not exactly a heist movie; "anti-heist" would be a more accurate description. The entire film features only a short heist scene at the beginning, probably less than 10 minutes long. The rest is an aftermath of the successful robbery.
Kelly Reichardt explores not the crime itself, but the connections and trust involved in committing crimes in The film. Unfortunately the plot and screenplay are on a complete downward trend. Feels quite tedious and overwhelming at times. The film evokes the feeling of a Polaroid photograph and features a rich jazz soundtrack, but the main strength of the film is impeccable performance by Josh O'Connor. Man never disappoints.
