Uncut Gems (2019) is a crime, thriller, and psychological drama film in which
we see Adam Sandler in the role of Howard Ratner, a New York–based jeweler deeply trapped in a gambling addiction. He is constantly chasing the next big win, making one wrong decision after another. His life is built on lies, manipulation, deception, reckless risk-taking, mounting debts, and a rare Ethiopian opal around which the entire story revolves.
The film’s pacing is razor-sharp and extremely fast—it barely gives you time to breathe. The experience is tense, chaotic, and filled with overlapping dialogues, shouting, verbal abuse, and nonstop noise. Through this chaos, the film makes you feel themes like greed, gambling addiction, debt pressure, obsession with risk, manipulation, and the illusion of “I’m in control.”
Adam Sandler delivers a career-best, top-notch performance. He is so convincing that at no point does he feel like Adam Sandler—the screen only shows Howard Ratner. His performance completely dissolves the actor into the character.
The film’s ending, shaped by Howard’s wrong decisions and his dealings with the wrong people, feels inevitable yet deeply tragic. At its highest emotional peak, the film delivers a shattering ending—one the audience is completely unprepared for.
Ultimately, Uncut Gems makes one brutal point clear:
debt, greed, gambling addiction, obsession with the next big win, reckless risk-taking, manipulation, and dealing with the wrong people—these very things eventually turn into your greatest enemies.

Uncut Gems by Safdie Brothers is the career best performance of “Adam Sandler”.
When you have consequences for the things you do; that’s what makes it dramatic.
