MAN OF CINEMA
In post french colonial time in africa, When the French military pulling out of
the country and abandoning people due to escalating civil war with rebels, we see a woman who does not want to leave her land behind, trying hard to keep her crumbling coffee plantation running. Clair Dennis portrays a strong willing french woman who is unconcerned with what is happening around her and what others say. she believes she can do anything, fearless and unafraid of danger. But it is also very disillusioned , entitled and oppressive in a way, how she was holding on to the colonised land and using the native black people for hard labour. She believed that money can buy everything, until the truth and reality hit her hard. The film has a very complex theme which projects different perspectives both from colonisers, rebels and innocent civilians. "White Material" is a metaphor for an obsession and infatuation among the oppressors, leading them to cling to power, materialism, and "white material" possessions. They yearned for wealth and comfort even in the mist of chaos and violence. Unlike Denis' other works, which often attempt to create still-image visuals evoking longing, sorrow, and nostalgia, this film employs a handheld camera, with more realistic photography invoking a sense of realism. This effectively reflects the character's emotional state, their fears and anxiety in a very raw form.
