MAN OF CINEMA
"There are more important things in life than money, you know?"
One of the
best dark crime comedies you will ever see. Fargo portrays a chain of fatal errors triggered by greed, betrayal, deception, and violence with all its quirks and wits, making it so unique in its genre.
It's a modern noir where absurdity and brutality coexist with bleak humour. Coens’ sharp writing never misses a beat and writing is brilliantly complemented by damn good performances especially by Frances McDormand. Each character is just as memorable as the events around poorly executed kidnapping and aftermath which unfolds in a perfect way.
The film buries our feet and mind deep in the snow of the everyday life of rural minnesota and then pushes us into the abyss of the grotesque moments of human life. Snow acts as a metaphor in this film, covers every individual's greed, dark secrets and intentions, like snow covers everything in that town.
The film feels more european than american, because the way the film is executed with long shots and not much melodrama or long dialogues and is emotionally neutral.
Visually, it is a teaching lesson in narrative films, perfect fixed shots, open spaces, a desaturated palette, and a masterful use of silence. Fargo creates a perfect atmosphere and setting for the human's inner monsters to be born from the everyday mundane life when we allow desire to become a moral debt.
Fargo is a modern classic which doesn't impose, it insinuates. It confronts us with the worst of ourselves from the simplest perspective. And in doing so, it reminds us that true horror doesn't scream... it simply slips away, like blood in the snow...
