From the City of Lodz

1969 Polish ShortShort Documentary

This documentary explores the changing faces of the old Polish city of Lodz, and how its modernization, both physically and culturally, affects the older, more conservative residents, many of whom lived through World War II and are confused and somewhat resentful at the changes they're seeing.

An amazing documentary from Kieslowski capturing daily life of Lodz.
Kieslowski shows how conservatives are getting targeted one by one through dialogues and here the target is shown as the ban of the Edward Ciuksza Mandolin Orchestra. Scenes of folk festival enrich the city's soul. The upcoming era's tech fascination through a quirky voltage testing machine of how much voltage can people handle. Seeing those real visuals make me emotional especially in the retirement part. " Perhaps in the end of the world, There's a town, the best of all towns. Perhaps it shines like gold or perhaps it shines in us. " The film closes with panoramic shots of crumbling buildings and construction juxtaposed with the above lines. Exceptional short. Kieslowski's stuff works so well with me already. It's refreshing to see the hardships faced by conservatives though cause i really don't know when did i even see cinema showcasing the hardships of conservatives.
