An exceptionally crafted film by the greatest folklore director fueled by
mind-blowing visuals and exemplary score with top-notch acting.
Nosferatu is a Gothic horror film that reimagines the F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic. The film is set in 1838 Germany and the whole film very realistic to its timeline as well as its environment. The film delves into themes of obsession, desire and supernatural. Ellen's psychic bond with Orlok during her childhood resurfaces upon her marriage to Thomas. This connection manifests in Ellen's seizures and visions symbolising the inescapable grip of past traumas. The atmosphere of the film creates the tension and intensity and oppressed feeling very well.
Robert also depicts the clash between ancient evil and the modern world highlighting the consequence of human curiosity.
Nicholas Hoult is currently one of the best actors of this generation. His performance was impeccable. Lily-Rose Depp was marvellous. Bill freaking Skarsgard again; unnoticeable character, monstrous performer.
The combo of Robert Eggers and Jarin Blaschke is the best combo of Hollywood after Nolan and Hoytema.
Jarin employs a desaturated colour palette and natural lighting to evoke the film's gothic atmosphere. The use of candlelights and custom-made high speed lenses allows for scenes illuminated solely by real flames enhancing the authenticity of the film.
Just after hearing the first word coming out of the one and only Willem Dafoe hyped me up like hell. The only feeling I got was that I am gonna enter into a phase in the film where iam gonna be left in awe by a 69 year old mad man performing madly. The same happened. Then he comes up pulling of a dialogue like this.
" I have seen things in the world that would've made Isaac Newton crawl back into his mother's womb. We have not become so much enlightened as we have been blinded by the gaseous light of science. "
This dialgogue is thought-provoking, not just for the film pov, but also in real life. Imagine if the lines were true. Imagine that we are really blinded by the gaseous light of science that we couldn't get enlightened to view myths as real history ( when it happens to be real too ). Damnn it's crazy.
The set design and costume design were magnificent. It literally immerses you into the 19th century European setting. The prosthetic makeup of Orlok was unbelievable. It was amazing.
The score by Robin Carolan was outstanding. It complements the film's haunting visuals with choral arrangements and unsettling string motifs. Excellent work. It elevates the film's intense sequences so well.
Robert is the goat of realistic approach in cinema.
The only thing that was a problem for me was the intensity at some scenes. I wished the film would have had a little more horror sequences too. A little more in-depth analysis of the flashbacks and the life cycle of Orlok would have been so good.
Nonetheless, this film is a thought-provoking craft from Robert Eggers which will be remembered for a long time just because of its visual aesthetic itself. There's a lot more to unfold from the film. Definitely i need to re-watch this.
This film deserved to win the oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling period. For these 3 awards, no other film deserves more than this.
