MAN OF CINEMA
MAN OF CINEMA
A period drama in its true nature, the events that started from the 1600s till
the 1990s. Its a woman's journey who is longing for love, freedom and searching for her own identity. It offers a unique commentary on exploration of sexuality, gender identity and role of women in the society and in arts, poetry and relationships across the centuries. This was highlighted by showing Tilda's character disguising as a man in order to exploit privileges and freedom in this hypocrite Patriarchal society which remains same to some extent across centuries, otherwise she couldn't have enjoyed these things being a woman. But in this journey she is going through a transformation regarding her own gender identity and her journey of self acceptance. It's a quest of more than 100 years of finding a true self. There could not be a better actress than Tilda Swinton who could play this character so perfectly. She conveys ambiguity in the character with her expressionless face and gestures. The film has a beautiful set design which will transport you into that majestic era. But despite such a complex subject and screenplay the movie did not make an unforgettable impression on me. I felt it lacked certain intensity and stakes of journey across centuries.
