An amazing documentary what is both intriguing and saddening.
The photo taken after Warsaw got liberated from the Nazis. It's crazy how the photo of liberation has such emotional weight in it. How the photo of happiness has such a tragic story behind it is very saddening. Kieslowski is seriously crazy for pulling of the suprise reveal methods. They investigate and move from one place to another in a non-linear structure which makes the documentary more interesting. Kudos to the editor. The difference in the brothers' explanation of the photograph is thought-provoking. But when the brother started crying after recollecting the first thing from the photograph ( mother's death ) was very sad and heartbreaking to watch. Minimal staging, handheld camera, and natural lighting deliver poignant candidness in this Black-and-white short. This documentary short is actually an exploration of how a photograph, once dormant, can resurface buried emotion. The final silence hits hard. When the picture was shown to a random woman in the Brzeska street, she said it was a tragic time where his son lost his leg where he even could have lost his life. One picture. Many emotions. Both happy and sad. Liberation of Warsaw yet Betrayed Imposition of Communism.
